Introducing, from Chicago, Illinois, Sky Blue……..

Born in October 1999, Sky Blue debuted as a professional Wrestler on the independent circuit at the age of 18 where she represented Premier Pro Wrestling (PPW) in a losing effort against Sierra. This match was held at the PPW Studios in Woodstock, Illinois on June 24th, 2017. Skye would battle Sierra over the next month before moving on to gain valuable experience by facing Youtuber and retro gamer Connor Corr for the remainder of the year.

You can catch many of these matches over on the PPW YouTube channel. Sky would continue to wrestle Connor into the early quarter of 2018 before then fast forwarding & featuring in August of 2019 for GPW (Global Professional Wrestling) where she would win and hold the GPW Battle Royale Championship for one month.

Throughout October & November of 2019, Skye would wrestle for Championship gold in both CSW & PWX, unfortunately falling short in both before returning to PPW and facing both Champion  Kaci Dillon & Miranda Rites in a triple threat match, Miranda Rites was victorious and became the new champion.

Moving into 2020, Sky Blue would feature for several independent promotions including Fusion Wrestling, CSW, BCW & LLT. It was on January 19th of 2020 that Skye Blue would capture the vacant LLT Women’s title where she was victorious against Missa Kaye, Rahne Victoria & Ryan Matthews in a four-way elimination match.

Skye would successfully defend that title in a 5-way match before days later capturing the CSW Women’s championship, defeating, Dream Girl Ellie. Skye Blue would go on to successfully defend that title over the next 12 months where she faced Billie Starkz, Kylie Rae & Rahne Victoria. On May 4th 2021, Skye Blue would debut for NWA at Power Surge, falling short to Jennacide. This marks the beginning of a new chapter.

After making her debut in NWA, Skye would continue to successfully defend the CSW & LLT Women’s titles whilst also featuring for GCW, AAW & New Texas Pro where she faced Masha Slamovich.

In June 2021, Skye would return to NWA facing Jennacide once again, this time on the pre-show of ‘When our Shadows Fall’ & then teaming with Thunder Rosa to face Kylie Rae & Serena Deep in a losing effort on NWA Super Powerr #3. It was not until the NWA EmPowerr pre-show that Skye Blue would pick up her first win where she defeated Christi Jaynes.

Over the next 4 weeks, she would face Lady Frost, Kiera Hogan & Melina before debuting for AEW via AEW Dark in a losing effort against Rhio on September 1st 2021. Skye would feature again on Dark, facing Red Velvet before making her PPV debut in the Women’s Casino Battle Royale at AEW ALL Out. Skye would return to AEW Dark before making her Rampage debut against the dominant & undefeated Jade Cargill on October 6th 2021.

It was not until December 3rd, 2021 that Skye Blue secured her first win in AEW where she overcame Ashley D’Amboise on AEW Dark, however, she ended the year competing in Warrior Wrestling & AAW before another AEW Dark: Elevation victory this time against Angelica Risk.

January 2022 started hot for the fast-rising Skye Blue, competing in multiple promotions including AEW where she gained further experience against the likes of Serena Deeb, Robyn Renegade, Emi Sakura & Nyla Rose. Skye also faced Jade Cargill once again but this time the stakes were much higher as this bout was in a TBS Championship Eliminator, unfortunately, this was not yet her time as we now know what Jade Cargill achieved as the TBS Champion in later months.

In January 2022 Skye would return to Warrior Wrestling, competing in a mixed tag match as she teamed with Dante Martin and would walk out victorious against the team of Isaias Velazquez & Kylie Rae.

Throughout the first quarter of 2022, Skye Blue would continue to feature regularly for AEW on Dark whilst also taking bookings for CSW, Fusion Pro Wrestling & Warrior Wrestling. A notable match featured in Warrior Wrestling for Skye as she challenged for the Warrior Women’s Championship in a Triple Threat Match, facing champion Thunder Rosa & Athena. It was only 4 days later that Skye would face Julia Hart for the first time in AEW – a story that we will touch on later.

At the end of March, Skye would compete in the Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, unfortunately falling short in defeat against a future AEW Women’s World Champion, Jamie Hayter. In the months that would follow, Skye would team consistently with Anna Jay, most notably picking up tag team wins when including Ruby Soho against Emi Sakura, Nyla Rose & The Bunny.

In April 2022, Sky would return once again to Warrior Wrestling, once again in a triple threat match for the Warrior Women’s Wrestling Championship, however, on this occasion the championship was vacated. Athena eventually won this bout which also featured the talented Shazza Mckenzie.

At the end of April, we would witness the first-ever teaming of Skye Blue & Willow Nightingale who were also joined by Trish Adora to take on Jade Cargill’s Baddies on AEW Rampage, the start of a new chapter for Blue.

Skye Blue Is All Elite

Independent dates were gradually becoming less and less as Skye would feature on a weekly basis for AEW, but she did drop the AAW Women’s title to Christi Jaynes on the Bourbon Street, Illinois PPV for the company.

In August of 2022, Skye was gaining a bit of a ‘cult’ following, a very likeable and relatable young lady who has shown that she can compete with the best that the industry has to offer, this was proven once again when she teamed with Ashley D’Amboise to take on two of the main players in the AEW Women’s division – Dr Britt Baker & Jamie Hayter. In the very same month, we saw both Skye Blue & Dante Martin challenge for the AAA World Mixed Tag Team titles as they challenged Sammy Guevara & Tay Melo on an episode of AEW Rampage.

To close out 2022, Blue was facing Dr Britt Baker, Tay Melo, and Jamie Hayter & feuding with the baddies whilst also teaming again with Willow Nightingale. Skye finally got her shot against Jade Cargill for the TBS title in January 2023 at Battle of the Belts, she fell short in this match, however, this was the match that many believed to be both Skye Blue & Jade Cargill’s best televised AEW matches to date.

In the first quarter of 2023, Blue was heavily featured in singles competition, most notably in defeats to Toni Storm & Ruby Soho who had formed the Outcasts along with Saraya, whom she ultimately fell to in a very gracious defeat.

Throughout May & June of this year, we would witness the rise of Skye Blue & Willow Nightingale as a tag team, defeating Marina Shafir & Nyla Rose in the process, however, before that, Blue challenged the ROH women’s champion to a match for the title in a 15-minute classic, unfortunately falling short, it was recognised that the Sky is the limit for Blue (No pun intended).

During the month of June AEW hosted a House Rules tour where Skye challenged for the AEW Women’s world title on two occasions, firstly challenging the champion Toni Storm in single action and then the following night in a four-way match which also featured Britt Baker & Anna Jay – Toni Storm retained in both matches. Skye Blue had clearly impressed once again as she was then challenging Toni Storm on AEW Dynamite on June 14th after winning a Number one contenders match just seven days prior, once again falling short but winning over more and more fans with each display.

In a very notable victory which came on AEW Collision – the first time on the Saturday night show for Blue, she overcame the challenge of the outcasts (Ruby Soho & Toni Storm) whilst teaming with Willow Nightingale. This then led to the 2023 Owen Hart Foundation Tournament where Skye made it to the Semi-Finals but fell short to Ruby Soho on this occasion.

Sky Blue would return to AEW Collision in a losing effort to Taya Valkyrie before notable matches on Rampage against Anna Jay & Saraya. On a special edition of AEW Rampage Fight for the Fallen, she would team with Hikaru Shida to defeat the Outcasts once again before making a pleasantly surprising debut for Revolution Pro Wrestling in August 2023, the 11th-anniversary show held at the Copper Box Arena in London, England, a show that I attended.

Skye entered a number one contenders battle Royale which was eventually won by Dani Luna. The next night was the historical AEW ALL IN PPV held at Wembley Stadium, unfortunately, Skye did not feature that night but she did return to AEW Rampage & ROH, again teaming with Willow Nightingale.

In September of 2023, Skye would fall short in a singles match against Julie Hart who was now a member of The House of Black, a match held at Arthur Ash stadium, also a story that would continue over the weeks and months to follow.

On the September 23rd 2023 episode of AEW Collision, Julia Hart sprayed black mist into the eyes of Skye Blue. Over the course of the following weeks, we would witness gradual changes to the persona and demeanour of Blue, donning heavy black makeup around her eyes. This storyline would continue into November where it seemed possible that Skye Blue would align herself with Julia Hart, however, Skye sprayed Julia in the eyes with a blue mist of her own. Regardless, Skye Blue remained altered, clearly not shaking the damage done.

At AEW Full Gear on November 18th, Sky Blue challenged the then-champion Kris Statlander & Julie Hart in a triple threat match for the TBS championship, a match where Julia Hart captured the gold.

In the weeks that led up to the December 16th Episode of AEW Collision, we saw less and less of the team of Skye & Willow with the latter seemingly confused and frustrated with the new attitude of her friend. Finally on this episode of Collision Skye Blue turned heel, aligning herself with Julia Hart as they began to beat down Abadon before the returning Thunder Rosa made the save.

A week later we saw Julia & Skye team up to take on the team of Abadon & Thunder Rosa, unfortunately it was not to be on this night as Abadon & Thunder Roar picked up the win, allowing Abadon to continue her hot streak in her pursuit of the TBS title where she will challenge Julia Hart as AEW Worlds End on December 30th.

So what is next for Skye Blue? Surely Championship gold Is just over the hill. Is she using this time to align with Julia Hart before taking down the champion from the inside and capturing her first championship in AEW or is this a force to be reckoned with in the AEW Women’s division? Time will only tell but look for an even bigger year in 2024 for Skye Blue because 2023 truly was a breakout.

Josh.
