#9. Heath Slater Returns

Speaking personally, of all the 2020 pandemic releases, I found Heath Slater’s one of the saddest. Very few did some much with so little compared to “The One Man Band”, who reinvented himself as a Horrid Henry-calibre rockstar to a kid-loving jobber working for his family, which saw him become popular with the hardcore and casual fanbase.

In spite of his 2020 letting-go, the ginger-haired enhancement talent would make one more return prior to signing with Impact! Wrestling.

One of the first feuds of WWE champion Drew McIntyre after winning the title was with ex-Raw Tag Team champion co-titleholder Dolph Ziggler. As a part of Ziggler’s technique of mind games, he brought back the recently-released Slater, who had been the leader of the 3 Man Band (3MB) stable which also counted the Scotsman amongst its ranks.

Slater than proceeded to cut the promo of his career, producing a semi-shoot promo about how he had a family, a real family, and although Heath supported McIntyre, McIntyre did not support him.

It was a great sensation display as Heath revealed he had known Drew for over a decade, cried when he won the world title, and even called The Scottish Warrior everyday after he was released. “Where were you for me?” Heath now asked McIntyre, compounding this by stating: “I was there for you, and you weren’t there for me.” Slater continued how his family man persona was more than just a gimmick but his true character, emotional as he spoke about his two daughters. Cutting through the ice block of kayfabe, Slater’s blistering promo demonstrated the talent of Slater. It is however, tinged in sadness with WWE opting to release someone who just provided evidence as to the untapped potential of the company stalwart.
